What to Do When You're Not Motivated?

“The hardest period in life is one’s twenties. It’s a shame because you’re your most gorgeous, and you’re physically in peak condition. But it’s actually when you’re most insecure and full of self-doubt. When you don’t know what’s going to happen, it’s frightening.”
― Helen Mirren

Welcome back lovelies!

I have recently completed my internship. It was the most liberating and motivating experience of my academic year! However, as soon as it ended, I no longer felt like I had stuff on my plate and that is a feeling, I do not like. This meant that it lead me to the labyrinth of laziness.

It's been a week now and currently, while I am occupied with certain other stuff, I have lost touch with academics and I definitely am unmotivated. My lazy moments have now turned into days and I've messed up my schedule more than once.

Hard relate? Yeah, I know. We all go through this.

So what are my plans to get back on track?

I saw a Reel on Instagram that made me go "WOW! I NEED TO DO THIS!". I do not remember who it was, as much as I'd love to, but the reel basically gave me the inspiration for this blog post.

The person in the reel mentioned that we should always have 3 kinds of routines inculcated in our lifestyle so that we don't feel "unmotivated" or "guilty" for not sticking to a routine- Kinda like how I am feeling right now!

So I dug a little deeper to understand what they meant, and here's what I've come to conclude-

THE THREE KINDS OF ROUTINES

  1. Have a routine for the days when you're the most active/ energised.

  2. Have a routine for the days when you're not so active/ energised.

  3. Have a routine for the days when you're absolutely feeling like shit.

SO HOW DOES ONE MAKE THESE ROUTINES?

It's simple, really.

Think about the days when you're most motivated. What are the goals that you'd like to achieve? What would your perfect day be like?

That is something you'd want to inculcate in your Routine No. 1.

For example, I want to wake up anytime between 7:00 am to 7:30 am, followed by a workout routine, writing my morning pages, carrying out all the work, spending time in nature, less social media, read at least 3 pages of a book and going to bed before 11:30 pm.

- This is my perfect routine. This is something that I aspire to achieve when I'm the most energised.

My second routine would be reducing my workout time to merely meditation for bout 10 mins, followed by my morning pages, less work, a bit of rest, reducing my readings to one page and sleeping maybe a little late.

The third routine would be, waking up a little later, followed by moring pages, mostly relaxing with not a lot of work to do and sleeping a bit late. This is the routine that I follow when I'm the least motivated or feel terrible. If I follow this routine religiously when I feel like shit, I would not feel guilty for not following a perfect routine.

If you're someone like me who feels guilty for not doing things that they're supposed to, make up a routine. This is just what I had in my mind. Your routine would obviously depend on what you feel about yourself on a particular day!

In the end, DO WHAT MAKES YOU HAPPY! Not every day has to be productive!
